The differential operators Zj​ commute with D=∂t​+a(v)⋅∇x​. Indeed [D,∂vj​​]=−∑i​(∂vj​​ai​)∂xi​​, canceled by differentiating the explicit time factor in Zj​. Hence Zj​f satisfies the same transport equation as f, and obeys the same L2 norm conservation when boundary fluxes vanish. For the standard Jacobian matrix (Da)ij​=∂vj​​ai​, the vector of these derivatives is ∇v​f+t(Da)T∇x​f.
