For the planar diffusion equation nt=D0∇⋅[(n/n0)2∇n], a mass-preserving radial similarity solution has n=n0λ−2F(r/(r0λ)). Substitution reduces the equation to (ξF2F′)′=−(ξ2F)′ when λ5λ˙=D0/r02. Zero central flux and F(0)=1 give the compact profile shown above, with λ6=6D0t/r02. Its height decays as t−1/3 and its radius grows as t1/6; its total mass is 2πn0r02/3.
