If (fn) is Cauchy in the smooth-function metric, each derivative sequence (fn(r)) converges uniformly to a continuous function gr. Passing to the limit in
fn(r)(x)−fn(r)(0)=∫0xfn(r+1)(t)dt
(1)
shows that gr′=gr+1. Hence g0 is smooth and fn→g0 in the metric.
