For a uniform solid cylinder of mass Mc and a frictionlessly sliding wedge of mass Mb, take the horizontal wedge position X and uphill contact coordinate s. Contact and rolling without slipping leave two degrees of freedom. Up to a constant, the Lagrangian is L=21(Mb+Mc)X˙2+MccosαX˙s˙+43Mcs˙2−Mcgssinα.
The cyclic coordinate X gives (Mb+Mc)X¨+Mccosαs¨=0. The other Euler-Lagrange equation is cosαX¨+(3/2)s¨=−gsinα. Elimination proves the displayed acceleration, with X¨=−Mccosαs¨/(Mb+Mc). For Mb≫Mc, the cylinder approaches the fixed-incline acceleration −(2/3)gsinα.
