D. Baltimore is the first author, with A. S. Huang and M. Stampfer, of a 1970 study showing RNA polymerase activity in vesicular stomatitis virus virions. The enzyme incorporated nucleotides into RNA complementary to the viral RNA. This distinguished the genetic information carried by a virus from the working molecular machinery packaged with it.[ref]
