The de Haas-van Alphen effect is an oscillation of a metal's magnetization as changing magnetic field moves Landau levels through the Fermi energy. The associated Onsager quantization gives inverse-field period for an extremal Fermi-surface cross-section . Oscillatory resistance is instead the Shubnikov-de Haas effect.
