The Dirichlet hyperbola method gives D(x)=2∑a≤r⌊x/a⌋−r2, where r=⌊x⌋. The harmonic number estimate Hr=logr+γ+O(1/r), with γ the Euler's constant, yields D(x)=2x(logr+γ)−r2+O(x/r+r). Substitution of r=x+O(1) gives the displayed asymptotic expansion. Comparison of ∑n≤xlogn with its integral consequently gives ∑n≤N(τ(n)−logn−2γ)=O(N) for integer N.
