D. R. Gies co-authored a spectroscopy study connecting stellar wind signatures with the X-ray behavior of Cygnus X-1. The team monitored H-alpha emission and separated components associated with different moving gas structures.
Comparing those line profiles with X-ray output supplied evidence about the supply of gas to an accreting black hole. The paper interpreted changes in the donor wind as a possible driver of changes in accretion rate and radiation state.[ref]
