For the upper plane-wave branch of the quintic real Ginzburg-Landau equation, put Λ=2R2(2R2−α)>0. A modulation of wavenumber p has growth rates −p2−Λ/2±Λ2/4+4Q2p2. Long-wave phase diffusion is positive when 4Q2<Λ, giving the displayed stability boundary. At equality the leading phase growth is −p4/Λ, so the boundary is marginal in the diffusion coefficient but damped at the next spatial order. In the (μ,Q) plane the boundary is μ=2Q2−α[α+α2+16Q2]/8.
