For a classical three-dimensional harmonic trap of fixed frequencies, E=3NkBT and D∝NT−3. Combining dE=ϵevdN with these equations gives dlnD/dlnN=4−ϵev/(kBT). Since evaporation decreases N, phase-space density of an atomic gas increases only when the removed mean energy exceeds 4kBT. Merely lowering temperature requires only ϵev>3kBT. Changing confinement adds trap work and changes these formulas.
