Engel theorem

A finite-dimensional Lie algebra is nilpotent if and only if every adjoint map ${\mathrm{ad}}_x$ is nilpotent. A Lie algebra of nilpotent endomorphisms can be simultaneously represented by strictly upper triangular matrices.
