The foot from c to the line a+tu, with u=0, is its orthogonal projection onto that line. Solving (c−a−tu)⋅u=0 gives the displayed formula and proves uniqueness. It belongs to the line segment with endpoints a and a+u exactly when 0≤(c−a)⋅u≤∥u∥2.
