Rotate an ellipse with positive semiaxes a,b about an axis a distance r>a from its centre. For the parametrized surface σ(u,v)=((r+asinu)cosv,(r+asinu)sinv,bcosu), put R=r+asinu and D2=a2cos2u+b2sin2u. An outward unit normal is N=(bsinucosv,bsinusinv,acosu)/D. Direct differentiation gives the first fundamental form and second fundamental form, with the convention IIij=⟨σij,N⟩:
I=D2du2+R2dv2,II=−Dabdu2−DbRsinudv2.
(1)
Reversing the unit normal reverses II, but the Gaussian curvature K=ab2sinu/(RD4) is unchanged.
