For the Hamiltonian H=(p2−x2)/2, a Gaussian wave packet Ae−Bx2 satisfies A˙=−iℏAB and B˙=−i/(2ℏ)−2iℏB2. The displayed solution is normalizable for real ϕ exactly when sin(2ϕ)>0; its second moments of a complex Gaussian wave packet are
⟨x2⟩=2sin(2ϕ)ℏ[cosh(2t)+cos(2ϕ)],⟨p2⟩=2sin(2ϕ)ℏ[cosh(2t)−cos(2ϕ)].
(1)
Both grow as ℏe2t/[4sin(2ϕ)], while their difference and hence the mean energy remain constant.
