For the proposed Gaussian wave packet, differentiation gives
∂tΨ=(A˙−AB˙x2)e−Bx2,∂x2Ψ=(4B2x2−2B)Ψ.
(1)
Inserting these in the Time-dependent Schrödinger equation with Hamiltonian (p2−x2)/2, its right-hand side becomes
[ℏ2B−(2ℏ2B2+21)x2]Ψ.
(2)
Equating the constant and quadratic coefficients with iℏ∂tΨ yields
A˙=−iℏAB,B˙=−2ℏi−2iℏB2.
(3)
Conversely these two equations make the substitution an identity, so they are sufficient for the Gaussian evolution in an inverted harmonic oscillator.
