For a standard bivariate normal distribution with correlation ρ, each conditional has variance 1−ρ2 and mean ρ times the other coordinate. A sweep draws Xn+1=ρYn+1−ρ2Z1, then Yn+1=ρXn+1+1−ρ2Z2. The resulting coordinate chain is an AR(1) process with coefficient ρ2 and innovation variance 1−ρ4. It shows explicitly why near-unit correlation slows successive Gibbs sweeps.
