For a linear operator f, the generalized eigenspaces
ker(f−αI)n
(1)
belonging to distinct eigenvalues are linearly independent. On the generalized α-eigenspace, f−βI=(α−β)I+N is invertible for β=α because the nilpotent part N has a finite geometric-series inverse.
