A generalized Heegaard diagram permits compression bodies and a nonempty negative boundary. Equivalently, a suitable handlebody with two-handles attached along only part of a compressing system can retain torus boundary components. Disk crossings supply generators and attaching-curve words supply relators for its fundamental group.
