For a geodesic γ with initial velocity v, (f∘γ)′′(0)=Hessf(v,v), because the covariant acceleration vanishes. Summing over an orthonormal basis of the tangent space gives Δf(p)=−∑i(f∘γi)′′(0) for the nonnegative Laplace-Beltrami operator.
