Let τ be an affine parameter for a geodesic of ∇ and suppose ∇ˉXY−∇XY=V(X)Y+V(Y)X. Then ∇ˉγ˙γ˙=2V(γ˙)γ˙. For the new velocity dγ/dt=γ˙/t′, the acceleration is (t′)−2[∇ˉγ˙γ˙−(t′′/t′)γ˙], which vanishes under the displayed differential equation. Its nonzero solution t′=Cexp(2∫V(γ˙)dτ) changes the parameter while preserving the curve.
