For b=A(y)+B(z), constant nonzero f0, and zero basic velocity at z=0, thermal-wind balance gives
uˉ=−f0zA′(y),vˉ=0.

With full buoyancy represented by f0ψˉz, the constant-coefficient three-dimensional quasi-geostrophic potential vorticity is qˉ=f0+zA′′/f0+f0B′/N2. The reference-buoyancy convention in quasi-geostrophic potential vorticity changes only the uniform reference contribution.
