For box-normalized plane waves in volume V, a potential has matrix element W(kf−ki)/V. The final-state density per energy and solid angle is Vmkf/[(2π)3ℏ2]. Dividing the golden-rule rate by incident flux ℏki/(mV) gives (m2/4π2ℏ4)(kf/ki)∣W∣2. Elastic scattering has kf=ki; the arbitrary box volume cancels.
