For one internal species, the grand canonical partition function of a classical ideal gas satisfies lnΞ=zV/λ3, with quantum gas fugacity z=eβμ and thermal de Broglie wavelength λ=2πℏ2/(mkBT). Differentiating the grand potential gives N=zV/λ3, hence μ=kBTln(nλ3). An internal partition factor must be included consistently if internal states are available.
