In a thin ideal-gas grey atmosphere with T4=Te4(1/2+3τ/4), constant enclosed mass M and luminosity L, and κ=κ0ρT13, divide the stellar hydrostatic equation by radiative diffusion in a star. This gives PdP/dT=16πacGMRT−9/(3κ0Lμ). Integrating from P=0, T4=Te4/2, yields
P2=3κ0LμTe84πacGMR(4−T8Te8).

Logarithmic derivative gives ∇=T8/Te8−1/4. For a monatomic gas gas, the Schwarzschild criterion reaches equality at ∇=2/5, hence T/Te=(13/20)1/8. The purely radiative profile cannot be continued past this point as a convectively stable model.
