Connecting a conductor to a large reference reservoir fixes its electric potential, conventionally at zero, while allowing electric charge to enter or leave. Grounding does not fix the conductor's net electric charge. In electrostatics, its surface is then a prescribed-potential boundary for Poisson's equation.
