The group axioms require closure and associativity of the binary operation, an identity element, and an inverse for every element.
An associative binary operation on a nonempty set makes a group if there is with for every , and every has some with . No left identity element or left inverse element assumption is needed. First, an idempotent element of a semigroup satisfies : choose with and compute . If , then , so by the previous observation. Finally, . Thus all group axioms follow.
Suppose a nonempty semigroup has, for each , elements satisfying and for every . Then it is a group. For any fixed , the element is a right identity element, and is a left identity element. Since , they coincide in a two-sided identity . For each , putting in the two assumed identities gives and . Associativity then yields , a two-sided inverse element. Thus the usual group axioms follow without an assumed identity or cancellation law.
