For vacuum incidence at fixed angle θi into a transparent isotropic medium, Snell's law gives n(λ0)=sinθi/sinθt(λ0). Thus dn/dλ0=−ncotθtdθt/dλ0, and
ng=n[1+λ0cotθtdλ0dθt],vg=c/ng.

Angles must be differentiated in radians. This determines the local group velocity from a first derivative of measured refraction angles; pulse broadening needs further information about group velocity dispersion and absorption.
