For dimensionless depth ν=a2mV0/ℏ, each negative branch of zcotz=−ν2−z2 gives one bound state. The nth state exists exactly when ν>(n−1/2)π. At equality its exterior decay constant vanishes and the state is not square integrable. In particular, exactly two bound states means 3π/2<ν≤5π/2. This strict lower and inclusive upper endpoint convention counts negative-energy eigenstates, excluding a zero-energy threshold solution.
