A hologram is the recorded wave interference pattern used for holographic wavefront reconstruction. The pattern need not resemble the object. A photographic emulsion stores a material change produced by exposure; a digital intensity record instead requires numerical reconstruction or a device that displays the corresponding optical modulation.
