A post-helium-ignition stage of low-mass stellar evolution with core helium nuclear fusion and usually a hydrogen-burning shell. The branch spans a broad range of effective temperatures at comparatively similar luminosities, largely because envelope masses vary.
The concentration of core-helium-burning stars on the cool part of the horizontal branch. It must be distinguished from the ascending hydrogen-shell-burning red giant branch.
