hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry follows exchange of exchangeable hydrogen with deuterium and measures mass changes, often after digestion into peptides. Protection can reflect hydrogen bonds, burial or restricted structural opening; altered exchange is not uniquely diagnostic of a binding interface.
