For focal distance a>0, ξ≥0 and 0≤θ≤π, the displayed prolate spheroidal coordinates are orthogonal coordinates. The three coordinate tangent vectors have lengths hξ=hθ=asinh2ξ+sin2θ and hϕ=asinhξsinθ. Their product gives the Jacobian determinant a3(sinh2ξ+sin2θ)sinhξsinθ. A positive constant ξ gives a prolate spheroid with equatorial semiaxis asinhξ, polar semiaxis acoshξ, and foci (0,0,±a). The surface degenerates to the focal segment at ξ=0; this coordinate degeneracy is distinct from a singularity of the surrounding Euclidean space.
