A prolate spheroid is an ellipsoid with two equal shorter semiaxes and a longer symmetry-axis semiaxis. Its meridional section is an ellipse rotated about its major axis. In the coordinates R2/(λ+α)+z2/(λ+β)=1 with β>α, a fixed regular λ has equatorial radius λ+α and polar radius λ+β; its focal separation is independent of λ, giving a confocal family.
