Immigration-death worm-burden model (p˙j=λpj−1+μ(j+1)pj+1−(λ+μj)pj)

Independent worm acquisition at rate λ and loss at rate μj produce a birth-death process for within-host parasite burden. Summing its forward equations against j gives dE[j]/dt=λ−μE[j]. At constant exposure, detailed balance λpj=μ(j+1)pj+1 yields a Poisson distribution with mean λ/μ. Heterogeneous acquisition rates change the pooled burden distribution even when each individual host follows this model.
