Insert a transverse plane wave u=u0ei(k⋅r−ωt) into the inertial-wave vorticity equation, with k⋅u0=0. It gives ωk×u0=2i(Ω⋅k)u0. Applying k× again and using transversality gives the title dispersion relation. If θ is the angle to the rotation axis, ∣ω∣=2∣Ωcosθ∣. At fixed direction the angular frequency does not depend on wavelength. Parallel wavevectors give the maximum 2∣Ω∣; perpendicular ones have zero frequency and belong to the nonoscillating balanced limit.
