For two inviscid layers of equal depth h between rigid lids, with lower density ρ2​ and upper density ρ1​, a horizontal mode of wavenumber k satisfies
ω2=ρ1​+ρ2​ρ2​−ρ1​​gktanh(kh).

The sign reverses when the heavier fluid is above, producing the Rayleigh-Taylor instability.
