For the Inverse Gaussian distribution parametrized by shape ψ and mean λ, the joint maximum-likelihood estimators are λ=Yˉ and ψ=(Y−1−1/Yˉ)−1. With known λ, the shape estimator is instead (Y−1−2/λ+Yˉ/λ2)−1. Parameter orthogonality gives the same Wald test formula n(ψ−ψ0)2/(2ψ2) in both fits. The two estimators differ by Op(n−1) under regular model sampling, so the test statistics agree to first order under the null; they need not be numerically equal in finite samples.
