Bui Tuong Phong was a computer scientist whose work on computer graphics includes the Phong reflection model. His 1975 paper, Illumination for computer generated pictures by Bui Tuong Phong, connects geometric descriptions of surfaces with the calculation of their visible appearance.[ref]

The Phong reflection model separates Lambertian reflectance and specular reflection contributions, letting a broad matte response and a concentrated highlight be adjusted independently. For a concrete software example, the JavaFX PhongMaterial class combines those contributions with ambient and self-illumination terms, using the surface normal vector, reflected-light direction and viewing direction in its calculation.[ref]

JavaFX PhongMaterial is the JavaFX material class for local lighting based on the Phong reflection model. It combines diffuse and specular components, colors and texture maps to determine a rendered surface's appearance. When a diffuse color and diffuse map are both supplied, their components multiply rather than one simply replacing the other.[ref]
For example, a green diffuse color tints an image texture green, while changing specular power changes highlight concentration. A high value produces a narrower highlight; it does not turn the object into a mirror of the surrounding scene. The official class documentation explicitly excludes environment-mirror behavior and refraction effects for this material. Consequently a glossy-looking object is an approximation supplied by a lighting model, not a simulation of every optical interaction.
