One useful version is the effective global Torelli theorem for K3 surfaces. Let be complex K3 surfaces and let
preserve the integral cup-product pairing and the Hodge decomposition. Suppose that carries some Kähler class of to a Kähler class of . Then
Conversely every isomorphism has these properties. In particular, for projective K3 surfaces an integral Hodge isometry carrying an ample polarization to an ample polarization is induced by a unique isomorphism of the polarized surfaces. This is the effective global Torelli statement.
The Kähler-cone condition is necessary if the prescribed isometry itself is to be induced by an isomorphism. If is the class of an effective smooth rational -curve, the reflection
is integral, preserves the pairing, and preserves the Hodge decomposition because has type . It sends to . An automorphism preserves effectivity, whereas is not effective: it has negative intersection with an ample class. Thus this Hodge isometry is not an automorphism pullback. Requiring an isometry to respect the Kähler chamber removes precisely this kind of obstruction.
The three identifications are
They match the same lower-dimensional theory, including its moduli of a string compactification, charged states and extended branes. Different weakly coupled descriptions occupy different limits of its moduli space.
For the M-theory circle duality, write and let be the eleven-dimensional Planck length. The standard length dictionary is
The circle radius is the type IIA superstring theory coupling modulus. The eleven-dimensional metric supplies the ten-dimensional metric, dilaton and Ramond–Ramond potential through Kaluza-Klein theory; the three-form supplies and the Neveu–Schwarz two-form by . Thus the field content also agrees with type IIA supergravity.
The M2-brane and M5-brane tensions are and . Wrapping one spatial direction multiplies the effective brane tension by . Consequently:
These tension and charge relations explain why increasing reveals an eleventh dimension. The simple circle dictionary describes massless type IIA supergravity; a D8-brane involves its massive extension and Romans mass.
For the M-theory torus duality, the complex structure of the torus is the IIB axion-dilaton
Its area supplies the remaining radius modulus. In a common nine-dimensional mass normalization, an M2-brane wrapped on the entire torus has mass , identified with ; hence is inversely related to the torus area in that normalization. Radii quoted in different string or Einstein metrics also include their Weyl rescaling. A rectangular torus with cycle radii has . Equivalently, first reduce to IIA and use T-duality:
where in this formula use the corresponding string metrics. Shrinking the torus area at fixed decompactifies the IIB circle. The torus mapping class group becomes IIB S-duality.
An M2-brane wrapped on a primitive one-cycle gives a (p,q) string, whose tension is the membrane tension times the cycle length before conversion to the IIB metric. Momentum on the torus matches winding of these strings on the IIB circle. An M5-brane wrapped on the whole torus gives an unwrapped D3-brane; an unwrapped M2-brane gives a D3-brane wrapped on the IIB circle. An M5-brane wrapped on one torus cycle gives a (p,q) five-brane wrapped on the IIB circle. The unwrapped M5-brane is the magnetic dual of the IIB circle's Kaluza-Klein mode, represented by its Kaluza-Klein monopole five-brane. These identifications match effective spatial dimensions as well as electric and magnetic charges.
For the M-theory K3 duality, the common noncompact spacetime has seven dimensions and sixteen supersymmetry generators. A Ricci flat K3 surface has a positive three-plane in its second real cohomology, equipped with the K3 intersection lattice of signature . The unit-volume moduli space of Ricci-flat K3 metrics has local form
with a discrete lattice identification and one additional positive volume modulus. This is the heterotic Narain moduli space on , together with the seven-dimensional coupling: its torus metric has six parameters, its antisymmetric tensor three, and its sixteen gauge Wilson lines forty-eight, giving before the dilaton.
The coupling–volume relation can be checked dimensionally rather than guessed. A wrapped M5-brane gives a heterotic fundamental string with tension , so its squared string length is proportional to . The seven-dimensional gravitational coupling is proportional to . Their dimensionless ratio gives
Thus the large-volume M-description corresponds to strong heterotic coupling. Overall constants depend on the normalization of the lower-dimensional coupling.
There are twenty-two gauge fields from reducing on the twenty-two harmonic two-forms of K3, matching the heterotic sixteen gauge vectors plus three metric and three two-form vectors. The remaining seven-dimensional three-form is dual to the heterotic two-form. A wrapped M2-brane gives an electrically charged particle in the shared charge lattice, matching heterotic momentum, winding and gauge charges; an M5-brane on a two-cycle gives its magnetic three-brane. An M5-brane wrapping all of K3 gives the heterotic string, while an unwrapped M2-brane corresponds to a heterotic NS5-brane wrapped on . At suitable collapsing two-cycles, charged membrane states become massless and yield ADE gauge enhancement. The geometry accounts for both generic abelian charges and nonabelian enhancement. There is no extra K3 two-form modulus in the M-description: its fundamental potential is a three-form, and .
The geometric argument uses the Mixed Heegaard Floer invariant defined in Question 5(iii). First suppose ; the genus-zero qualification is discussed below. Write . Blow up distinct points of the surface. Its proper transform in has class
Choose the extension of the Spin-c structure with
Since , its exceptional evaluations are , so the Blowup formula for the mixed Heegaard Floer invariant has no extra power of . Thus , and
This calculation is why the self-intersection appears with a plus sign.
It remains to bound the Chern pairing for a square-zero surface . Its oriented normal bundle has Euler number zero and is trivial, so . Choose an embedded positive-square surface disjoint from , with positive direction left in its complement, and cut along . To see why the choice is possible, impose orthogonality to in the intersection form. A nonzero isotropic class uses at most one positive direction; therefore leaves at least two. Choose an integral positive-square class in that complement, represent it by a surface, and remove algebraically cancelling intersections with by tubing along . This alters genus but not the class. The neighborhood of supplies one positive direction and the complement supplies another. Since its normal Euler number is nonzero, is onto, proving that the cut is admissible.
Put the outgoing puncture inside , so that the plus Heegaard Floer cobordism map on the side containing passes through the Floer group of . On the chain level this means splitting the cobordism along that boundary and composing its handle maps; with the fixed determinant class, every intermediate generator has restriction . If the Chern pairing exceeded , the given completed minus group would be zero. As in Question 3, this is the completed convention: for a non-torsion structure, ordinary infinity may retain -torsion, whereas is invertible after completion. Such a pairing is positive for , so is non-torsion and the completed infinity group is zero as well. The completed fundamental long exact sequence, whose plus group is the usual plus theory, then makes that plus group zero. The Heegaard Floer cobordism map, and consequently the Mixed Heegaard Floer invariant, would vanish, contradicting nonvanishing. Therefore
Substituting the preceding blowup calculation proves
Reversing the orientation of the surface gives the usual absolute-value form of the Adjunction inequality for the mixed Heegaard Floer invariant.
The printed assumptions omit the positive-genus qualification. With the actual Floer groups, the asserted three-dimensional vanishing is false for : the torsion structure on has two nonzero minus towers, although its pairing is . Correspondingly, a small sphere embedded in a ball of a K3 surface has , and Chern pairing zero, while the canonical Mixed Heegaard Floer invariant is nonzero; the desired inequality would read . Thus the displayed proof establishes the intended positive-genus statement. If the supplied vanishing is instead taken literally as a formal additional axiom for every genus, the same factorization would force the inequality even for a sphere, but that axiom contradicts the actual computation.
A connected integral projective variety has only constant regular functions, so . By Serre duality and , . The assumed first sheaf cohomology vanishes. Therefore the Euler characteristic of a coherent sheaf is
These hypotheses characterize the K3 surface setting used below.
The intersection calculation in part (vi)(a) gives . Part (vi)(b), with its necessary qualification, excludes every nonzero fixed part. Thus and is movable. Part (v) gives , and by hypothesis. Applying part (ii) proves
Thus a nontrivial nef divisor of square zero on a K3 surface defines a fibration over a curve; the key step is fixed-part elimination on a K3 surface.
A minimal algebraic surface is a smooth projective surface containing no exceptional curve of the first kind, namely no smooth rational curve of self-intersection . An abelian surface contains no rational curve because every morphism from to an abelian variety is constant. It therefore has no -curve and is minimal.
For every , the Minimal Hirzebruch surface is a rational minimal surface. These surfaces are pairwise nonisomorphic: the negative section is the unique irreducible curve of negative self-intersection and has square , so an isomorphism would recover . Thus there are infinitely many nonisomorphic minimal rational surfaces.
A K3 surface is a smooth projective surface with and . For a smooth curve of geometric genus , the adjunction formula gives
and hence
An elliptic surface is a smooth projective surface with a morphism to a smooth curve whose generic fiber is a smooth genus-one curve. If is an elliptic curve, projection
is an elliptic fibration. Its canonical bundle is pulled back from , so every positive pluricanonical space vanishes and the Kodaira dimension is . This supplies the requested negative-Kodaira-dimension example.
For an elliptically fibered K3 surface, choose a smooth quartic containing a line . The canonical bundle of a smooth projective hypersurface formula makes trivial, and the standard cohomology sequence gives , so is K3. The pencil of planes through cuts into plus a residual plane cubic. The residual linear system is basepoint-free, has square zero and defines a morphism whose generic fiber is a smooth plane cubic. This is the Elliptic K3 surface from a quartic containing a line.
A surface of general type is a smooth projective surface of Kodaira dimension two. Let be a smooth plane curve of degree eight and let
be the degree-two cover branched along . The branch-cover canonical-bundle formula gives
This divisor is ample, so is a double plane of general type and is the required finite morphism of degree two.
Polarized Hodge structure 2026-10-14
A polarization is a nondegenerate integral bilinear form of symmetry , orthogonal on Hodge summands except complementary bidegrees, satisfying the displayed positivity for every nonzero . This convention takes the cup-product pairing as the primitive geometric polarization. Omitting the constant sign factor and rescaling is an equivalent convention. The full intersection pairing of a K3 surface is not itself a polarization: its real space has one positive direction as well as nineteen negative directions.
Primitive cohomology 2026-10-14
For a compact Kähler manifold of complex dimension and , this is the cohomology killed by the indicated power of a Kähler class. The Hodge–Riemann bilinear relations polarize its Hodge structure. On a K3 surface, primitive degree-two cohomology is the orthogonal complement of the chosen positive class.
Rational double point 2026-10-14
A rational double point is a normal surface singularity whose minimal resolution has a configuration of smooth rational -curves of type , or . Birational projective models of K3 surfaces arising from nef big systems contract orthogonal -curves to these singularities.
