Leon M. Lederman coauthored the experiment showing that neutrinos associated with muons behave differently from those associated with electrons. The detector compared long charged tracks with electron-like showers after a shielded accelerator beam crossed it. The result established a second neutrino flavor through the identity of the produced lepton.[ref]
