For a normalized spatial wavefunction, ⟨r2⟩=∫r2∣ψ(r)∣2d3r. Its square root is the root-mean-square radius, which differs from the exponential decay length. A spherical hydrogenic donor state with ψ∝e−r/a has ⟨r2⟩=3a2, obtained by dividing the radial integrals of r4e−2r/a and r2e−2r/a.
