For ψ1=cos(πx)sin(πz), the first temperature mode is θ1=(2π)−1sin(πx)sin(πz). The streamfunction advection bracket is J(ψ1,θ1)=(π/4)sin(2πz), independent of x. The second-order equations therefore have ψ2=0 and
θ2=−16π1sin(2πz).

This modifies the vertical temperature gradient. Its interaction with the critical roll produces the cubic term in the amplitude equation.
