Melvin Schwartz helped develop accelerator neutrino beams and coauthored the discovery of distinct electron and muon neutrino flavors. Letting secondary mesons decay and shielding the charged products supplied a penetrating beam. Its interactions revealed predominantly muons, connecting the production process with the flavor of the outgoing lepton.[ref]
