For ut=(aux)x, this conservative finite difference method uses coefficient samples at edge midpoints. For smooth a,u, its spatial residual is h2(auxxxx/12+a′uxxx/6+a′′uxx/8+a′′′ux/24)+O(h4). With zero Dirichlet boundary conditions, −vTLhv=h−2∑jaj+1/2(vj+1−vj)2. If 0<a≤a+, its eigenvalues lie in [−4a+/h2,0], giving the mesh-independent Forward Euler method bound Δt/h2≤1/(2a+). Constant a=a+ proves sharpness as the grid is refined.
