The modular Hamiltonian of a density operator is K=−logρ. For a Gibbs state, K=βH+logZ.

Linearizing the von Neumann entropy around a reference state gives δS=Tr(δρK). Around a thermal state this becomes δS=βδ⟨H⟩.
