Multilinearity 2026-10-25
Multilinearity is the property of being a multilinear map: each argument enters linearly while every other argument is fixed.
Let be the square matrix whose th column is . The Leibniz formula for determinants is precisely the stated contraction:
A square matrix has zero determinant exactly when its columns are linearly dependent, proving the required equivalence. One direction also follows directly from multilinearity and antisymmetry of a multilinear map: replacing one column by a linear combination of the others leaves only terms with repeated columns, each zero. Conversely, nonzero determinant gives an inverse matrix and hence independent columns.
Scaling the whole matrix scales all rows. The multilinearity of the determinant therefore gives
This includes for .
Multiplying by multiplies each of its columns by . The multilinearity of the determinant therefore gives
This includes .
Write . Since and is a linear map, the multilinearity of the determinant gives, for any column position ,
If for , the corresponding columns also agree, so . Thus is an alternating multilinear map of the columns of , even when is not invertible.
