Negative differential resistance ($dV/dI<0$)

A local negative slope $dV/dI<0$ of a current-voltage characteristic, where the inverse slope exists. This differs from negative $V/I$: a tunnel diode can have positive electric potential difference and positive electric current while $dV/dI<0$.
