For X=∂μϕ∂μϕ/2 in signature (+−−−), the derivative part of the quadratic action on a timelike background is 21(P,X+2XP,XX)δϕ˙2−21P,Xa−2(∇δϕ)2. Absence of a ghost requires P,X+2XP,XX>0; positive gradient energy requires P,X>0. The squared sound speed is their ratio P,X/(P,X+2XP,XX).
