If ∣λ∣>∥T∥, write T−λI=−λ(I−T/λ). The Neumann series applies to T/λ, so λ is outside the spectrum of a bounded operator. Thus σ(T)⊆{λ:∣λ∣≤∥T∥} and r(T)≤∥T∥.
The polynomial spectral mapping theorem gives σ(Tm)={λm:λ∈σ(T)}, and hence
r(T)m=r(Tm)≤∥Tm∥.
(1)
Taking mth roots and then the limit, whose existence is allowed, proves
r(T)≤m→∞lim∥Tm∥1/m.
(2)
Only this inequality is required; the reverse inequality is the additional content of the full spectral radius formula.
