Divide the Navier-Cauchy equation by mass density. Since μ/ρ=cT2 and (λ+μ)/ρ=cL2−cT2, it becomes
utt=cT2Δu+(cL2−cT2)∇divu.
(1)
Equivalently, using the vector calculus identity Δu=∇divu−∇×(∇×u),
utt=cL2∇divu−cT2∇×(∇×u).
(2)
The divergence and curl consequently propagate at cL and cT, respectively.
